This former mill at Chard is one of a number of fine examples surviving in Somerset. When the wool industry deserted Chard, the town became a centre for lace making with some 1,500 employed in the manufacture of plain lace.

The traditional woollen industry began to decline in the second half of the eighteenth century, the heart of the business passing to the increasingly mechanised mills of Yorkshire. American cotton and better transport were other factors, as was the sometimes violent resistance to new machinery in Somerset, especially in Shepton Mallet. Where machinery was installed in the nineteenth century woollen cloth continued to be important, but elsewhere its place was filled for a while by silk, a trade which had moved away from East London in 1773.
